NAPLAN

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is Australia's annual nationwide assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests four domains: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy. The results give schools, parents and education authorities a snapshot of how students are progressing against national standards.

The tests are administered online (with paper alternatives where needed) and are tailored — meaning the difficulty of questions adjusts based on a student's responses. This adaptive design provides a more precise measure of each child's ability. NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail exam; rather, it identifies strengths and areas where extra support may help.

Preparation works best when it's steady and low-pressure. Regular reading, writing for different purposes, and practising mental maths and problem-solving build the underlying skills NAPLAN measures.
