Numerical Reasoning Test: Questions, Answers & Preparation
Numerical reasoning tests measure how well you work with numbers under time pressure — not advanced maths, but clear thinking with arithmetic, proportion and data. They appear in 11+ and independent-school entrance exams, secondary-school aptitude assessments such as CAT4, scholarship tests, and graduate and job selection. The maths rarely goes beyond what is taught by age 14; the challenge is speed, accuracy and reading each question carefully.
Number series. Find the rule linking a sequence and give the next term. Example: 3, 6, 12, 24, ? — each term doubles, so the answer is 48. Rules can add, subtract, multiply, divide, alternate between two steps, or combine them.
Word problems. Turn a sentence into a calculation. Example: a book costs £4.50 and a pen costs £1.20; how much change from £10 for one of each? £4.50 + £1.20 = £5.70, and £10 − £5.70 = £4.30.
Ratio and proportion. Share amounts or scale a recipe. Example: a recipe for 4 people needs 200 g of flour; for 6 people you need 200 ÷ 4 × 6 = 300 g.
Percentages. Find a percentage of an amount, or an increase or decrease. Example: 20% of 150 is 150 ÷ 100 × 20 = 30, so a 20% discount on a £150 item leaves £120.
Data interpretation. Read values from a table, bar chart or pie chart and compare or combine them. The trap is usually a units change between the chart and the question, a mislabelled axis, or a "how many more" that needs a subtraction rather than a total.
Rates and averages. Speed, price per unit, and the mean. Example: a car travels 120 miles in 3 hours, so its average speed is 120 ÷ 3 = 40 mph.
A method that works on almost every question: read the whole question before touching the numbers; underline what is actually being asked; estimate the answer first so a silly slip stands out; do the calculation in clear steps; then check the result against your estimate and the units.
Timing. Most tests allow around a minute per question or less. If a question is not coming together within about 90 seconds, mark it, move on, and come back — a blank you return to is worth more than three minutes lost on one item. In multiple-choice papers, eliminating the obviously wrong options first can turn a hard question into a one-in-two chance.
Common traps. Answers that are correct but for the wrong part of the question; forgetting to convert pounds to pence or hours to minutes; reading a "not" or "except" too quickly; and choosing the option that matches an intermediate step rather than the final answer.
How to prepare. Practise little and often, and always against a clock once the method is secure. Review every question you get wrong and name the reason — misread, wrong method, or arithmetic slip — because the fix is different for each.
