UK SATs (Standard Assessment Tests)

The UK SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) are national tests taken by pupils in England at the end of Key Stage 1 (age 7) and Key Stage 2 (age 11). They provide a snapshot of a child’s progress in core subjects and help schools gauge the effectiveness of their teaching.

Key Stage 1 SATs assess English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling, and mathematics. Key Stage 2 adds a written English component and tests science in many schools. Each test is timed and consists of a mix of multiple‑choice, short‑answer and extended‑response items.

Effective preparation combines regular practice with clear feedback. For example, a typical Year 6 maths question might be: What is 45 ÷ 5? To solve, divide 45 by 5: 5 goes into 45 nine times, so the answer is 9. Practising similar division, multiplication and problem‑solving tasks builds confidence and speed. Parents can reinforce learning at home by reviewing past papers, discussing strategies, and ensuring the child understands the reasoning behind each answer.
