CAT4 Practice & Preparation
The CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) is used by many UK secondary schools and international schools for baseline assessment and setting, and by some independent schools as part of admission. It has four batteries: Verbal, Non-Verbal, Quantitative and Spatial reasoning.
What each battery tests
- Verbal reasoning — analogies and classification with words.
- Non-verbal reasoning — figure matrices and series.
- Quantitative reasoning — number relationships and sequences.
- Spatial reasoning — rotating, folding and analysing shapes.
Can you prepare for it?
The CAT4 has no pass mark — it reports a Standardised Age Score around a mean of 100. You cannot cram ability, but familiarity removes the disadvantage of meeting a matrix or spatial question for the first time under a clock.
