Two habits for the KS2 arithmetic paper. Check each answer with the inverse operation: 4,215 − 1,876 = 2,339, and 2,339 + 1,876 = 4,215 proves it. Show formal working on long multiplication and division, where a method mark can be awarded even if the final answer is wrong. Then choose the check that proves 864 ÷ 24 = 36.
Bruno the bear works out 1,624 ÷ 14 with long division: write the 14 times table down the side, then divide, multiply, subtract and bring down, one digit at a time, to get 116. Then try 2,592 ÷ 24 yourself and learn the zero trap. A regular KS2 SATs arithmetic paper question.
To work out 2.6 × 3, Momo the monkey ignores the decimal point (26 × 3 = 78), then puts it back with the same number of decimal places: 7.8. Learn to check with an estimate, then work out 3.25 × 4 yourself. A favourite KS2 SATs arithmetic paper question.
To multiply a fraction by a whole number, multiply the numerator: 3/5 × 4 = 12/5 = 2 2/5. To divide a fraction by a whole number, multiply the denominator: 3/4 ÷ 3 = 3/12 = 1/4. Pip the panda shows both with fraction bars, then you work out 2/3 ÷ 4 yourself.
